Cincinnati police offficer Philecia Barnes, born Phillip Barnes dressed as a man at work but as a woman at home. For this she was demoted.

A jury and a federal appeals court agreed this was discrimination. And the Supreme Court has decided to let the decision stand.

Richard Ganulin, one of the city attorneys, told justices employers should be protected from discrimination lawsuits based on “transsexual and homosexual characteristics.” The city maintains the demotion was for professional reasons.

It is the possessors of those “characteristics” who often need protection from the police.

The amazing thing is that many people have no idea how bad the American infrastructure actually is.

Yes, there is so little worker protection here compared to the European systems. Everything is individualized, so you have to take it to court to get any individual protection.

In the UK you are protected from unfair dismissal if you have worked at a place for a year, and they have Industrial Tribunals, and right to free counsel for them. You can’t just be sacked on the whim of an employer.
